How it works

When you pay into your pension, the government automatically gives you a top up in basic rate tax relief – provided you’re under 75 and a resident in the UK for tax purposes.

And if you’re a higher or additional rate taxpayer, you can claim back more through your tax return.

Use our calculator below to see how much tax relief the government will add, and how much you could claim pack if you’re a higher rate taxpayer.

About Your Results

This calculator isn’t personal advice and doesn’t confirm if you’re eligible or how much you can pay into a pension. Results are a guide based on 2023/24 tax rules and don’t cover every situation. Tax rules can change and the relief you receive will depend on your circumstances. Any contributions over your annual allowance could trigger a tax charge. Remember, your annual allowance may be reduced if you’re a high earner or have taken flexible pension benefits.

Assumptions Used

The calculator covers the income tax bands and the proportion of the contribution that falls into each one; the personal allowance (£12,570 in 2023/24) and the gradual loss of personal allowance between an income of £100,000 and £125,140. Tax relief can only be claimed on contributions up to your earnings (or £3,600 if you’re not working), assuming available annual allowance. In order to be eligible, you need to be resident of England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
